WORKSHOP “THE CHRISTMAS TABLE”
The story of the event with tips for a perfect Christmas table setting
Every Christmas, as punctual as the tree and decorations, our company events return: an opportunity to share the festive atmosphere outside our usual work context, but also to give you a glimpse behind the scenes of Blanc MariClo’. This time, we’re telling you about the “The Christmas Table” workshop, held on November 27, 2024, in the company of the Ladies Club entrepreneurs from Florence. This organization was created to foster personal growth and promote a stronger female connection in the Florentine context. Because when women support each other, extraordinary things happen, full of heart, soul, and creativity.
Essential components for creating a memorable Christmas table setting. Let’s see how to achieve it by retracing the stages of the event we organized in the setting of a wonderful historical Florentine residence, revisited in shabby chic style. Get inspired to set your holiday tables!
Rules for a perfect Christmas table setting
Knowing and respecting the rules for a perfect Christmas table setting is important, but what truly makes a difference is the ability to personalize this special moment by creating a table that gives your guests a unique emotional experience. In our workshop, we suggested how to set up a Christmas table that is both elegant and imaginative, combining plates and glasses with candles, vases, fabrics, and decorations. If you let your heart guide you, the result will be that magical balance of elements that makes everyone feel welcome and amazed.
Now, let’s start with the rules!
- Study the context: Where will your table setting be? What type of decor will it fit into? What colors will it match? What about the decorations already in the room? Is it for a buffet or a sit-down dinner? Asking yourself these questions before planning your Christmas table setting will help you make more conscious and consistent decisions, making your table the star of the show. For example, in our workshop set in a historic palace with a solemn appearance, we avoided a modern or minimalist setup.
- Consider who and how many guests: Is it a family gathering, a get-together with friends, or acquaintances? Is it for many or just a few? Will there be children? Considering your guests will help you navigate the nuances of informal versus formal settings to choose the most suitable for the occasion.
- Identify a guiding theme, whether it’s a color, a type of decoration, a fabric, or an overall mood. From there, you can start selecting elements for your Christmas table, searching among what you already have or, why not, rummaging through your grandma’s cupboard.
- Create harmony among the elements to ensure a sense of overall coherence and avoid a chaotic appearance. The table should always appear detailed, not sparse but not overloaded either. Consider fabrics, tableware, and decorations in balance.
- Think about accessories for the table, like a cart or service table, to provide additional space. These are especially necessary for larger gatherings or when the table itself doesn’t have enough room. Remember to decorate these accessories in line with your Christmas table’s theme. We did the same using a table cover and a pandoro wrap scarf matching the chosen tablecloth.
Tips for a "wow effect" Christmas table
The much-desired "wow effect" results from a series of stylistic and decorative choices aimed at breaking the mold. While rules serve as a base guide for a successful setup, diversions allow for personalizing the table setting to your desires and the feelings you want to evoke.
Here are some useful ideas to delight and surprise your guests with a striking table setting.
- Play with heights, especially when guests arrive. If you fear taller decorations might obstruct conversations during the meal, you can move them to a sideboard or shelf. This also lets you decorate the spaces around the table cohesively.
- Experiment with alternative uses of fabrics and objects: a sheet can become a scenic undercloth, a glass can transform into a candle holder and vice versa, a placemat can serve as a charger or napkin, a tree ornament can double as a place card or napkin ring, and a cake stand can support a centerpiece. The possibilities are endless—try unleashing your creativity!
- Focus on flowers: whether fresh, dried, or artificial, flowers are a great choice if you’re unsure about decorations. Remember, the centerpiece should never be too bulky to avoid hindering service and conversation. You can create a single arrangement for the entire table length or use multiple smaller ones that can be moved as needed.
- Never forget candles: they always create a warm, magical atmosphere. Perfect for the holidays, especially if you love glitter and sparkle.
All the details of our Christmas table
After the rules and suggestions, it’s time to reveal the secrets of the table setting created during the “The Christmas Table” workshop. As we mentioned, our goal was to create a setup that was both elegant and imaginative, blending creativity, style, and emotion. So, we based our theme on gold to convey luxury and brightness, perfectly complementing the all-white setting of our location.
With this in mind, we chose fabrics, chargers, napkin rings, candle holders, and decorations characterized by golden and sparkling motifs. To enrich the tablecloth, we used a light lace fabric. For personalization, we selected white cake stands and candelabras. Finally, we added a natural touch with garlands and small trees.
